Bloody Ethiopian-Saudi group fight ups tension

eeeTwo men were taken to hospital with various injuries following a group fight between Saudi and Ethiopian men early Sunday morning, authorities said.

The condition of the two injured, a Saudi and an Ethiopian, is yet to be determined by the hospital, Lt. Nawaf Al-Bouq, spokesman of the Jeddah Police Department, told Arab News.

Al-Bouq said that police received a call stating that a group of Ethiopian and Saudi men were fighting at a bridge populated with Ethiopian illegals on the Haramain Highway.

Police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control, he added.

Eyewitnesses said that three Ethiopian illegals immediately approached the car carrying the three young Saudi men when it broke down near the bridge, leading the group to engage in aggravated assault with hands and sticks, he said.

The case has been referred to the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution, Al-Bouq said.

Al-Bouq warned against recent misleading information and rumors about a group of Ethiopians attacking the entire district ofAl-Hamadniya northeast of Jeddah. “It is important to verify the accuracy of information coming from different media sources,” he said.

He also called for “referring to credible sources to report the news as it is without manipulating or exaggerating. Rumors have social adverse effects that can create fear among the public.”

The labor crackdown campaign, which began on Nov. 4 after a seven-month amnesty for illegal workers to formalize their status or leave the country, had aroused tensions between authorities and the public on one hand and illegal migrant workers on the other.
