Abdishakur Abdullahi Ahmed known as Shaashaa the Director of Radio City FM in Jowhar and RTN reporter was released from custody after 12 days of detention at the Police Station in Jowhar.
Shaashaa was arrested on Wednesday afternoon, 28 December. 2017 after the local authority accused him for airing hate speeches and creating false reports.
“Thanks to God, I was freed unconditionally and now stay with my family . I would like to thank NUSOJ leaders and anyone who took part my release. I sorry that I lost my freedom and spent in jail more than ten days without due process but I quite happy to gain my freedom now “ Abdishakur Shaashaa wrote on his facebook account minutes after his release.
Asked about if he was tortured during the 12 days he spent in the detention center Mr Shaashaa answered “I was treated well while I was arrested but I lost my personal freedom ” He added.
NUSOJ has been constantly demanding to Hirshabeelle administration to free the journalist since he was jailed and was regularly contacting to the members of local authority and now welcome his release.
Nusoj Secretary General Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu said “ The past 48 hours we were in Jowhar we met with vice President and Hirshabeelle Speaker and Minster of Information and after long hours of discussion with them and visiting two times in prison to the arrested journalist we finally succeeded our colleague Shaashaa to be released unconditionally” .
We can see some administrations have taken a heavy-handed approach towards the media but we demand all parties of Somalia to respect freedom of expression and safeguard journalists working in the hard circumstances Moalimuu added.
“The main reason we traveled to here was to push the release of Abdishakur Shaashaa despite other missions ,therfore we are quite happy to see Abdishakur Shaashaa released from custody ” NUSOJ President Mahir Jama Aden said in Jowhar.
